You can get hurt with 75% of bodyweight, or you can be healthy squatting over 1000 pounds. It’s all about doing it with good form and slowly building up what your body can handle (bones and connective tissues get stronger too, not just muscles). The impact on your joints of things like running is significantly higher than weight lifting, even at the higher levels. (Not that running is bad, just as a contrast to the perceived opinion.) Also, really, your father is the one who should have to substantiate his claims. Having a medical degree does not mean you know much about exercise science, and unless you’ve either got a study or tons of firsthand experience behind a statement like that, I stand by the opinion that it’s bro-science until proven otherwise.

Well, before I had seen it…Malibu barbie and Ken, of course. Sorta synominous with Hollywood, I guess.

Now it is practically closer than I want it to be…what I have seen it to be it is a bunch of expensive real estate in an area that is prone to wild fires and mudslides. A million plus dollar house could be a beach shack. People pay 15 grand a month to rent a house in Malibu. It has no personality from a town perspective…I think people just go there to get a glimpse of a celebrity and then say they did. The sea water is dirty….from a microbiological standpoint…and for my southern blood too damn cold to get into except for maybe a few hot weeks in the summer. During the summer the beaches are crowded with moms and kids (locals from around the area) and if you decide to get out and body surf…watch out for the wall of boogie boarders that caught the same wave you thought you were going to catch and you end up diving under the wave to avoid being slammed with boogie boards.

The life guards are nice and friendly and there are lots of facilities for beachgoers. The drive to the beach via Topanga canyon Rd, Las Virgines or Kanan Rds are all dramatic scenery as you drive thru these canyons. One of my favorite spots is Point Dume….as it has a bluff that overlooks the ocean and you can see the whales migrate in the spring.

    That's my piece on Malibu.

To be honest I have no idea if I get them. I was just curious, cause I’ve never needed to use them. I’m fortunate to live a life in which I don’t really have to “hide” it. I got lucky, and I don’t even live in a state with medical mj.

As a UK citizen I find it so incredible that somebody could need medical help and actually be petrified about ending up getting treatment because of finances. Is there any safety net? What happens if a hobo gets hit by a car and needs a heart transplant to save him? Is there any way he can get it?

*There is nothing wrong with doctors*. Everyone with a brain in their head–including any midwife who should be allowed near a pregnant woman–knows that there *are* people, like you, who need medical intervention. **And that’s fine**. It’s not shameful for you to have epilepsy and need the help. That’s what it’s there for. Even the unprofessional kook without training had doctors on her farm, and had C-sections performed 2% of the time. The point is that people who *don’t* need medical intervention shouldn’t be forced to receive it. That women who *don’t* need to lay on their backs to reduce risk of seizure injury should be allowed to give birth in a more comfortable, safer position. I don’t know *where* you’re getting the idea that people think no one should ever use a doctor. I mean, read my comment again: **”A good midwife will know when a doctor is needed”.** I want hopsitals to allow midwives and have more natural birthing options available for those who don’t need medical intervention. Needing medical intervention isn’t something to be ashamed of. You can bet your butt that if I develop any complications when I eventually get pregnant, I’ll be quite happy for doctors. But a *lot* of the medicalization of childbirth is as unnecessary as giving antibiotics for a cold (colds are viruses), and can be dangerous for no reason (C-section, induction, episiotomy–these should not be done without very good reason). But it’s fantastic that it’s there for *you*, and other at-risk women, so that you can give birth and not die! Just like antibiotics are *great* when I have strep throat, or an actual microbial infection. Just because something is less natural doesn’t make it bad. Yes, it’s less natural for you, how you’re going to give birth–but that’s because naturally, you’d probably die. Motorized wheelchairs are unnatural, and we shouldn’t put everyone in them just because, but they’re incredible for the people who need them. Glasses are unnatural, but they let me see! And yet, if someone wears them when they don’t need them, it can actually damage their eyes. It doesn’t make me less of a person to need them, though. Do you understand what I mean?

It's called the caduceus which first referred to the Greek god Hermes, but was adopted by medical organizations because of its resemblance to the staff of Asclepius, the Greek god of medicine.
