There has been much speculation over the meaning of the song over the years. Wikipedia explains quite a bit of it.

oldlady:I am a woman who had an abortion before they were legal–California, 1969.I had to endure the humiliating process of seeing two (male) psychiatrists and pleading my case so they could declare it detrimental to my mental health to have another child.ABout the same time, the prominent case of a woman who had been a children’s TV personality and had to fly to Europe (don’t remember exactly where) to end a pregnancy helped the abortion rights movement, as did full-page advertisements in NY Times and other papers (emulating similar ads in France), signed by hundreds of prominent women who had had illegal abortions.Roe v. Wade was a giant step out of servitude for women.Enforced pregnancy is tantamount to slavery. We can’t let them turn the clock back. Thanks for posting this.

This is a good question. I haven't crossed the 60 year line yet, but I grew up on the beach and here's what I remember:

Back in the 50's and early 60's the image industry was transforming from the car heroes such as James Dean in "Rebel Without a Cause" to the lighter, sillier side of life portrayed by Gidget and the Beach Blanket movies starring Frankie and Annette about surfing. This new beach image required new words such as Ho-Daddy and Cowabonga, Shoot-the-Curl, Surfer Joe etc.

If you remember these Beach Blanket movies you'll recall the motorcycle gang of Eric Von Zipper representing the old school image of James Dean and Marlon Brando. There was a subtle line being drawn in the sand between old-school and new-school. New words were needed.

Phrases like "Whoa, Dude," popped out of the culture later as more surfers got stoned on weed and acid trips became Hollywood's vehicle to add more new phrases to a new younger vernacular. This happened just after Woodstock in 1969 and moved towards the Cheech & Chong eras of the mid-70's.

Then, like OM stated, the Valley people came over the hill and brought Valspeak with them to the beaches. "Totally'" and "Fer shure" now ruled the airways for about ten years.

"Gumawa sila ng imbakan ng pagkain para sa mga biktima ng baha."

    Hope this helps!

good article. but before patting ginsberg heartily on the back, remember she wrote the opinion okaying school authorities to random drug test students participating in school extracurricular activities, ignoring the constitution. such acts simply leads to training in school that rights “are just words on paper.”

I’m a Pacers fan because of Reggie Miller, I grew up in California loving Magic and the Lakers, but once I moved back to Indy I couldn’t watch as many games on TV and Reggie was becoming quite entertaining to watch and eventually the only team I was rooting for was the Pacers. It was the regional team, so easy to root for, but also fun to watch. I loved being the underdog and watching Reggie (who got booed when he was drafted) become one of the top players in the league and lead the Pacers to the playoffs, something like, 16 of his 18 years as a Pacer. After he retired it became harder to watch the Pacers…the team had some thugs on the roster and kept getting in trouble, then stopped making the playoffs, but I remained a fan. I still attend about 5-10 games a year and I’m very excited about the Pacers future. There is a pride that goes along with your team especially if it is a local team, and after sticking to that team over the years and not just rooting for them when they are good, it’s awesome to see them do well. I disagree the teams are nothing more than a uniform, they give some cities hope and something to get excited about…also put other cities name on the map and help generate a lot of income for the city…which helps everyone. When Reggie was in his prime Indy was a basketball city, now it’s a football city because of the success of the Colts and Peyton Manning. One player can change a franchise and a city…just ask Lebron. I also root for specific players, I loved T-Mac and rooted for him with Orlando and the Rockets. I rooted for Bonzi Wells because we went to the same college (Ball State). I’m a big fan of stats and my favorite players are usually “complete” players, guys that fill up the stat sheet in every category and have solid fundamentals (James, Paul, Kidd, Durant, Love, Howard)…love seeing triple doubles. But I root against all these guys if they are playing the Pacers. I rooted for Lebron and the Heat against Chicago and Boston cause I felt he got hated for doing what any player on Earth would want to do, and now it seems to be paying off like he thought it would. But I feel both teams left deserve a championship, so I remain neutral and just sit back as an NBA fan and hope for a good series.

People will never see each other as equals. It is always us vs. them/my family vs. your family/people we like vs. people we hate. I’m sure there is a hippie commune in N. California with the rest of the burnouts from the Seventies preaching one world – but that is only possible by ignoring both history and reality. As far as Saddam and Bin Laden that ‘backhanded bullshit’ should be viewed within the context of the Cold War and worked out well for some and not so well for others. Reality again rears its ugly head. I’m not getting into the Israel/Palestine thing because they are both assholes. The sooner we stop buying oil from the Middle East, they sooner we can tell everyone there to fuck right off. As far as the US at war, it is our own damn fault for allowing our allies to abrogate their responsibilities in NATO and force us to pay for everything.
